Our projects range from conceiving of exhibitions and organizing group shows to designing exhibits and the accompanying publications. Our recent exhibition, in collaboration with the Chicago Design Archive, screened at Art on theMart on its 2.5 acre facade.

Chicago Design Through the Decades
November 18–December 30, 2022 (full run) and June 11–15, 2022 (popup/advance screening coinciding with NeoCon) | Art on theMart, Chicago | Exhibition concept and creative direction | Team collaboration | Curated by Cynthia Noble

Chicago Design Through the Decades is a swift, exciting journey through the history of Chicago design spanning the last one hundred years. The project is based on the vast collection of the Chicago Design Archive (CDA), the premiere and permanent online record of Chicago design, currently holding over 3200 examples of work by over 1100 Chicago designers. It was exhibited through two screenings in 2022 at Art on theMart, which features an outdoor public platform using 34 projectors and the largest projection viewing area in the world — 2.5 acres (approximately two football fields) — on the side of a massive and architecturally notable building situated along the Chicago River in downtown Chicago. What Comes After

March–April 2019 | Alcove Gallery, Chicago | Exhibition concept, exhibit design, and publication

This exhibition was created to serve as a manifestation of What Comes After Remix?, an essay by new media theorist Lev Manovich. Exhibition walls and surfaces are covered in a dense layering of images composed by randomly selected found images — a remixing of found images collected from various sources. The 72-page publication takes a similar approach with mixes upon mixes of imagery in densely layered compositions that reflect upon contemporary media culture and the act of appropriation.

Outlying

January–February 2019 | Seerveld Gallery, Palos Heights, IL | Solo show

Outlying represents investigation in two areas: outlying design form and outlying design content. Outside of common design practice and, in some cases, common design formats, the works developed for Outlying stem from personal interests in and notions of identity and popular culture, whimsy and improvisation, as well as experimental work with language and typography. Examining form, the works lean outward from standard graphic design practice to areas that are uncommon or blend with other disciplines. Examining content, the works focus on design itself as subject matter. Outlying was organized by Jean Carey at Seerveld Gallery, in the greater Chicago area. More…

Due Influence

March–April 2017 | Alcove Gallery, Chicago | Exhibition concept, exhibit design, and catalog

With the intent of illuminating the creative process, Columbia College Chicago faculty from the areas of Design, Art, Art History, Photography, Illustration, Cinema, Journalism, and Business & Entrepreneurship were prompted to submit a book that was formative to their practice and to write about the significance, and to select a salient quote from the book. The books, quotes, and writings were featured in the exhibition.

The Architectural Imagination: New Federal Project

2016 | 15th Venice Architecture Biennale & Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit | Exhibit graphics | Completed in collaboration with Zago Architecture

The Architectural Imagination is an exhibition of speculative projects designed for specific sites in Detroit, Michigan, which opened to the public in the U.S. Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. We collaborated with Zago Architecture to design information graphics to be included in the exhibition. The Zago proposal draws upon data from public records and this information was designed by the candidate as a series of posters to accompany the architectural plans and models. Exhibits graphics include: United States Resettlement Areas (map), Refugee Housing Scenario (map), Refugees Admitted to the U.S. (chart), Resettlement Timeline, Detroit Population (chart), and Project Site (map).

Following the initial public exhibition at the U.S. Pavilion of the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, this exhibition traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.

VPAC: A New Front Door
2016 | Gallery 400, Chicago | Exhibit design and documentation book | Collaboration with Zago Architecture and Sarah Blankenbaker

VPAC: A New Front Door was one of three competing architectural proposals commissioned by UIC and exhibited in Back to the Future: Visualizing the Arts at UIC, which celebrated a long architectural history of projecting possible futures. On the design team led by Andrew Zago, the documentation book and supporting exhibition graphics were created for Play — a strategy developed by Zago Architects — to consider the design of a UIC Visual & Performing Arts Center (VPAC).
